Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
