A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
